Go North East drivers go on strike over very low pay offer

Bus transport across the North East of England is likely to be severely disrupted next week, given the fact that bus company Go North East now faces three days of industrial action on 15, 18 and 23 March after staff rejected a new pay deal.

According to a new report, the reason behind the drivers’ decision to go on strike is the management’s lack of cooperation during negotiations for future pay rises. The union, which represents roughly 1,400 drivers, asked for a 4.5% increase over the next two years, but their demands were rejected.

Despite the strike, the company, operating services throughout Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside, is expected to run vital “skeleton services”, with schools and hospitals having top priority.
