More investment has arrived in Sunderland following the opening of an electric car battery plant. Nissan is stepping up its operations with the launch of its first lithium-ion battery factory in Europe and the move is seen to be a big endorsement for the firm's North-East workers who will soon begin manufacturing the all-electric Leaf hatchback. The new state of the art battery plant is next to the main production site. The exercise will employ an additional estimated 560 workers.
