Kier wins £100m contract for developing Swan Hunter shipyard
North Tyneside’s former Swan Hunter shipyard is set to undergo a huge, £100m-worth regeneration and re-development process, with Kier Property managing to secure the contract designed to breathe new life into the 34-acre site.
According to a local news report on this matter, under the terms of the contract, the developer will have to secure occupiers for the industrial and office complex and build units over the next three years. The main targets will be the manufacturing companies specialising in the offshore industries with benefits including access to the North Sea, a 300m quay, heavy-load lay down areas and facilities and infrastructure.
North Tyneside Council has secured £13.8m of funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the Homes and Communities Agency and the Local Enterprise Partnership Growing Places Fund towards the project.
Kier Group chief executive Paul Sheffield said: "We are pleased to have been selected to regenerate this iconic site. It has great potential to breathe new life into the area by attracting high-tech businesses, inward investment and creating new jobs. The new development will be of particular interest to advanced manufacturing companies that specialise in off-shore activity due to the great location of the site and purpose-built high-spec units."
The funding will support infrastructure improvements, which have already begun on the site to provide utilities, access and quay edge improvements and dredging to allow for larger vessels to berth.
Naturally, given the sheer size and value of the project, construction work will surely not be short, and will involve quite a large number of contractors. This is where Time & Attendance North East could put its extensive experience to work, since our systems are user-friendly, innovative and designed for the working environment. They also offer a wide array of features, such as support for contactless smart cards (which would really come in handy in a busy and dusty construction zone), as well as optional finger print biometrics and mobile phone SIM card support.
Moreover, the multi-user, networked, multi site Time and Attendance, Access Control, Fire Roll Call and security system includes European Working Time Directive checking and reporting and allows administrators to save up to 2000 employees, supports extensive shift management and payroll-related operations, the allocation of various pay bands, and much more.
