The management at Maltby Colliery have confirmed the closure of the century-old Rotherham coal mine. The deep coal pit which employs 540 staff will shut within the next quarter, its owners Hargreaves Services said. The Colliery was no longer viable on safety, geological and monetary grounds, it added. Dave Price, National Union of Mineworkers branch secretary at Maltby, gave thanks to the company for giving the employees their due redundancy pay and vowed to seek work for outgoing staff.
